How to set modems and terminal adapters over 115,200 bps when Windows 95/98/ME won't let you

With some modems and terminal adapters (such as the Motorola BitSurfr PRO), you can't set the speed over 115,200 bps by default. With some of our cards, to operate at 230,400 bps, you'll need to be able to set the Modem Properties and Dial-Up Networking to 230,400 bps. Fortunately, there is a way to make a slight modification to the Windows registry and get around this problem.

Please note: It is recommended to always back up your registry before modifying it! Please refer the the document on how to back up your Windows registry in this technical support section before proceeding.

1. Run REGEDIT from the "Run ..." command.

2. Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\Class\Modem\0000. (NOTE: Your modem may be installed at 0001, 0002, etc. You must select the one for the modem or terminal adapter you are wishing to edit.)

3. In the right-hand pane, you will see "Properties". Double click on it.

4. After double clicking "Properties", you should get a screen with many rows of text. Please look at the 4th row (the one that begins with 0018). The 3th through 6th digits (not including the 0018 digits or spaces) correspond to the maximum connection speed of 115,200 bps (or lower) bps. They will be C2 01 or 84 03 most likely. Highlight and replace them with 10 0E to bump the possible speed selection up to 921,800 bps.

For example, if it looks like this:

0018 00 C2 01 00 00 FA 00 00

You would change the C2 01 to 10 0E.

5. Please be sure not to change anything else and click 'OK' when done.

6. Exit out of REGEDIT.

You have now modified the registry so that you can select over 115,200 bps for your modem or terminal adapter.
