USB COM Serial Adapters

The VScom USB series offer additional serial ports via USB connectors. They install as standard Windows COM ports. Hence they are available in all Win32 compliant programs.

Installation
  1. With the COMi-series, there is a jumper field for RS-422/485 configuration.

    Open the case, set your configuration, and close the case. USB COMi series comes preconfigured for RS-422. However, checking is mandatory.
    Non-industrial adapters do not have jumpers inside.
  2. USB allows for hot plug. I.e. at any time it is allowed do plug in or pull out the USB connection cable. One limitation by the operating system: When pulled out, the reconnect should not occur earlier than 5 seconds after disconnect.
  3. If necessary connect the power supply to the USB device.
  4. Connect the USB cable to the device, and then connect the cable to the computers USB port.
  5. Windows will automatically detect the USB Serial Adapter.
  6. The Add New Hardware Wizard dialog box appears and searches for new drivers for USB Serial Adapter.
  7. From the listed box, choose "Search for the best driver for your device".
  8. Click on "Next".
  9. If not done already, insert the driver CD into the CD-ROM drive.
  10. From the generated choices, choose "Other location".
  11. Windows 2000 searches the complete CD. On Windows 98/ME select the directory "\USB\Win9xME" as the target. Click on "OK", and on "Next".
  12. Windows searches for the driver, and detects the .inf-file on the CD. It is ready to install the driver for USB Serial Adapter. Click on "Next".
  13. Windows copies the files to your system.
  14. The dialog shows "Windows has finished installing the software that your new hardware device requires". Click "Finish".

Checking installation

To verify the installation:

  1. Open "Control panel".
  2. Open "System" applet.
  3. Click the "Device Manager" tab.
  4. Click on the "+" sign next to "Ports (COM & LPT)".
  5. The "USB Serial Port (COMx)" is listed.
  6. Double click on it, you can check the resources of the new COM port.

Uninstalling Driver

To uninstall the drivers:

  1. Open "Control panel".
  2. Open "System" applet.
  3. Click the "Device Manager" tab.
  4. Click on the "+" sign next to "Serial Bus Controller".
  5. Select "USB Serial Port".
  6. Right-click "Remove" (Win98/ME) or "Uninstall" (Win2000).
