Installation of COM ports in Windows NT 4.0:

This document details the installation of COM: ports under Windows NT 4.0.
  1. Click on Start, Settings, Control Panel.
  2. Double-click on the "Ports" icon.
  3. Click the "Add..." tab.
  4. Make sure the COM port number is correct for the com port you are installing.
  5. Make sure the base IO Port Address is correct for the com port you are installing. If it is not correct, you can click the little down arrow to get a small list of pre-sets, which will include the proper base addresses for COM1-COM4. If you are installing a port over COM4, you must enter the base address in by hand, however. To do this, click inside the box where the default base address is listed. Then, enter the correct base address for the port. This base address can be found in the documentation for the Byte Runner serial card you are installing.
  6. Enter the IRQ for the serial port you are installing. The same IRQ must be selected on the card.
  7. If you have 16550 or 16650 UART chips installed on the ByteRunner card, leave the FIFO Enabled checked. If the card has 16450 UART chips on-board, un-check it.
  8. Click on "OK".
  9. Windows NT will indicate that you will need to restart it so the new settings can take effect. If this is the last serial port you are adding, click on the "Restart Now" tab. If you need to add more serial ports, click on the "Don't Restart Now" tab, and start following these instrcutions again starting with step 3.

After the serial ports are installed -

Changing the serial port defaults:

  1. To change the default settings for the serial port, select Start, Settings, Control Panel.
  2. Double click on the "Ports" icon.
  3. Highlight the com port you wish to change, and then click on the "Settings" tab.
  4. You can now make any changes necessary for your device. For modems, you should always use Hardware flow control.
  5. Once you are finished making any necessary changes, click on the "OK" tab.

Installing your particular modem on the new serial port:

  1. After adding the serial ports & rebooting your system, you will need to tell Windows NT what is connected to the ports. To add modems, go to Start, Settings, Control Panel, and then double click on "Modems". If you are adding a different kind of serial device than a modem, you will need to double-click on the appropriate icon. To keep thing simple, we will just explain with the example of modems, however.
  2. Click on the "Add..." tab.
  3. If you wish to have Windows NT try to auto-detect what type of modem you have selected, simply click "Next>". If you want to choose what type of modem you are using from a list, check "Don't detect my modem; I will select from a list.", and then click the "Next>" tab. If you are selecting from a list, skip to step 8 below.
  4. When Windows NT asks, "On which port do you want to run detection?", highlight the com port number, and then click "Next>".
  5. Windows NT will say, "The following modem was found on COMX:", and should list the appropriate modem. If it detected the modem wrong, click on "Change...", and select the appropriate modem.
  6. If you need to add any more modems, repeat this process starting at step 4. If you do not need to add any more com ports, click the "Cancel" tab.
  7. Click the "Close" tab on the modem properties screen.

You are done. Your modems should now operate properly from within Windows NT.

The following steps are for if you selected that you want to select your modem from a list. Please disregard these steps if you had Windows NT auto-detect your type of modem:

  8. If you choose to select from a list, simply select the type of modem installed, and then click "Next>".
  9. Next, highlight the COM port(s) that the modem is on when prompted, "On which ports do you want to install it?" Then, click "Next>".
  10. Click "Finish".
You are done. Your modems should now operate properly within Windows NT.
